The Importance of Knowing Your Neighbors

Apr 13 2012

No matter where you live, or how large or small your family is, you want your home to be safe. That’s why you install locks on your doors, invest in an alarm system and mount motion-sensor security lights. While these are all perfect ways to secure your home, there’s another layer of protection you can utilize for free:

Yes, knowing your neighbors is one of the most effective crime-prevention tools ever “invented.” If you’re friendly with your neighbors, you can mutually agree to “keep an eye on” each other’s’ homes. Unlike an alarm system, your neighbor can see, and report, suspicious behavior immediately.

Neighborhood Watch notes that working with your neighbors, “[brings] community members together to reestablish control of their neighborhoods promotes an increased quality of life and reduces the crime rate in that area.”

So, if you haven’t already, go over and introduce yourself to your neighbors—they’re good for more than just borrowing a cup of sugar.

Do you have a good relationship with your neighbors? Does your community participate in Neighborhood Watch?”
