Let’s take a look into the most costly facets of our lives.

  • Automobile: Let’s face it; your car is a money pit. To reduce the cost in our monthly budget, a few factors must be considered. If you live in an area where public transportation is an option, consider it. If not, carpooling with a colleague to and from work is the next best thing. If, like most of us, you have a car sitting in the driveway that is never used or doesn’t run properly, consider selling it, trading it in, or at least getting value for scrap metal. It’s also important to keep your tires properly inflated by checking them monthly.
  • Debt Reduction:  Any opportunity to reduce your debt will help in your monthly payments. Start by inquiring about rates to refinance your home and/or automobile. If, like most young Americans, you’re still feeling the burn from your college loans, try consolidating them, especially if your current rates are high. To help with credit card debt, request a credit card rate reduction and sign up for automatic debt repayment plans. In the end, selling unused items is a simple way to put money toward eliminating debt.
  • Energy: We all face a continual battle against our energy bills. By installing compact fluorescent bulbs and a programmable thermostat, you can cut back on wattage emissions and automatically alter heating and cooling when you’re not at home or asleep. Other options include installing a blanket for your hot water heater and reducing temperature, and air sealing your home to cut back on wasted energy. Some other simple tips for cutting back on energy bills include unplugging all unused electrical devices, and utilizing timers and power strips.
  • Food: We love to eat out, but sometimes there are cheaper options. Some tips for cutting back on food expenses include cooking (and packing) your own meals at home, bringing leftovers to work, reducing or eliminating eating out or take-out, buying non-perishable items in bulk, starting a garden, and buying generic.
  • Insurance: We all have to pay for insurance. Here are some ways to lower your premiums. Downgrade your health insurance, shop for homeowner and auto insurance, switch to term life insurance, and raise your deductibles.
