Tips on Finding the Cheapest Flights this Holiday Season

Nov 13 2013

The holiday season is just around the corner—and with it comes good food, camaraderie, and of course flights to be booked. To save yourself on time and money, we’ve compiled some tips to help you find the cheapest flights this holiday season.

·       Buy early or buy late, but be smart about it. The holidays are peak travel seasons, and making reservations late in the game could cost you money. Airline ticket prices usually go up in the last 2 weeks before flying, however, sometimes you can get lucky if you wait. You can buy tickets at the last minute for a good price if the airlines have failed to fill their planes. If you don’t want to take a chance, buy early.

·       We shop around for everything, so why not plane tickets? No matter how good it sounds, you should never book the first fare that your eyes come in contact with. Start your search by looking at major online travel providers through trusty apps and sites like Travelocity. If you don’t see anything in your preferred price range, don’t be afraid to bide your time.

·       Be flexible on departure location. If you’re lucky enough to live close to more than one airport, then check other fares nearby. Many online fare search engines will ask if you’re willing to depart from another city. Say yes, and you might just see that price drop. If possible, you might also try shifting your travel dates. Even the slightest shift can significantly lower the cost. And remember: you’ll usually find the lowest travel fares on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.

·       Get a refund when fares go down. If fares go down after you purchase your ticket, try asking for a refund. You might not always get one, but policies vary by airline, and many do not publicize that they will refund you the difference if the price drops. It doesn’t hurt to ask!

·       Fly on the cheapest day of the holiday season. Four little words that will save you a lot: fly on the holiday. Prices drop because no one wants to fly on these days, but if you get an early enough flight, you can zip through security and be assured that you won’t miss much of the festivities.

·       Check for deals and discounts. Most importantly, don’t forget to check around for deals, discounts, and the latest fare sales. If you’re a AAA member, you can find package discounts. Ask your local travel agent for deals you can use.
